Short history of Dubrovnik Summer Festival

In the 1950s, the Dubrovnik Summer Festival was established to blend the city’s Renaissance and Baroque heritage with contemporary drama and music. Drawing from Dubrovnik's rich artistic tradition, it highlighted works by Croatian luminaries like Marin Držić, Nikola Nalješković, Ivan Gundulić, and Ivo Vojnović.

The festival’s unique venues—squares, palaces, towers, and parks—hosted timeless classics. Shakespeare’s Hamlet was staged at Lovrjenac Fort, Goldoni’s Fishermen’s Quarrels at the city harbor, and Goethe’s Iphigenia at Gradac Park, all masterfully directed by Branko Gavella. Vojnović’s The Trilogy of Dubrovnik depicted the fall of the Dubrovnik Republic in authentic settings like the Rector's Palace, Sponza Palace, and a Gruž summer residence.

Showcasing top performers worldwide, the festival combined a stellar repertoire with meticulous organization. Most productions featured the Festival Drama Ensemble, Croatia's finest actors, while international groups like Piccolo Teatro and Old Vic made prestigious guest appearances.

Initially focused on Croatian composers, soloists, and orchestras, the music program expanded to feature global stars. The Rector's Palace Atrium, prized for its acoustics, became a focal point for performances. Notable artists included celebrated pianists, violinists, cellists, vocal ensembles, and singers like Montserrat Caballé and Nicolai Gedda, as well as jazz legends Duke Ellington and Dizzy Gillespie.
